Soundwalk 2009
I know it's been ages since I've posted anything. I must admit I've been forgetful and just now realized I should of been posting reminders about the monthly art walks! I'll try to be better about this, pinky promise.
On a much more personal note, since living at home without much to do other than tweak my resume and check craigslist obsessively, I've been able to enjoy going to every local art walk (that I've been meaning to go to but couldn't because I was working and going to my classes). Here's another art walk coming up this weekend called Soundwalk in Long Beach that I think is definitely worth checking out. I really wanted to go last year because I am not really familiar with "sound" art. But sadly, I was at school without transportation. This year it's a much different scenario: I'm living at home AND I have a means of transportation. Yay! Since no one wants to respond my phone calls, emails, and my freakin' resume, I've been try to see the positive sides of this recession and my unemployment status. :) But enough about me, if YOU too want to feel productive and do something artsy, come to the Soundwalk!
Here are the deets:
WHAT: Sound Art Event "SoundWalk 2009", a one-night event of sound installations by over 50 local and international sound artists.
WHERE: Throughout the area encompassed by Broadway, Atlantic Avenue, Ocean Boulevard, and Elm Street with a sound corridor on 1st Street that will connect the East Village and Pine Avenue. The art is exhibited in a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces.
WHEN: Saturday, October 3, 2009 from 5–10pm
ADMISSION: Free
PARKING: Metered parking is available on the street; additional parking is also available in the parking lot at the NE corner of Broadway and Elm Ave.

The Coming Insurrection
Well, maybe not the real one (as confirmed by Fox News). But I mean it's pretty damn close.
Looks like LA is going to get some Lomo lovin' soon. Just posted on the Mother Site is a new competition that calls for all your best shots of the Non-City. And as of now, Elijah Wood is two up on all of us.
But most importantly, the competition claims the selected photos will be part of a "feature presentation" and asks us all to "Stay tuned for the future of Lomography in Los Angeles!"

Tecate + Cheese Squares = MFA Opening
It's time once again for us to celebrate the accomplishments of others and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
This Thursday (September 17th) is the opening reception for USC's graduate exhibition and catalog release. This is all going down at the MFA gallery just off of Figueroa on 30th Street. Definitely going to be tons of fun and should have a really strong turnout. And be sure to grab a copy of the catalog (they're free).

Day at the Beach
Once again we're gathering our collective awesomeness and hitting the streets. This time, it's a day at the beach.
September 27th we're meeting up at Venice Beach for an all out lomographic adventure. We're aiming to meet at 11:00 on Ocean Front Walk and N. Venice Blvd. From then all out it's anything goes. We'll be mingling with the freaks (ok, to be politically correct, "persons of alternative living choices"), sampling some of the native foods, and of course burning through as much film as physically possible. So come with an itchy trigger finger and ready to walk.
When it ends? That's for us to decide.
So give us a shout if you're down for the cause and spread the good word.

Internet Hate Machine
I apologize to those with sensitive ears (or should I say eyes since this is the internet?), but shit like this really pisses me off.
No I don't mean people taking photos in museums, but people who write complete and utter shit like this. And this isn't even a defense of photographers, but a blatant attack on assholes like this guy (and this guy) who think that appreciating art is an accomplishment and/or skill. Please tell me I'm not alone on this one.
Three Best (well, worst) Examples of the Article:
1) "They were there not to see and be inspired by artists of genius, but to take snaps to prove they were there." (blow me)
2) "Being a fair-minded person, always willing to give people the benefit of the doubt, I benevolently considered the possibility that they were taking the pictures so they could study and appreciate the paintings at length, in detail and in the comfort of their own homes, rather than hastily, surrounded by crowds. Being a realist as well, I immediately rejected this absurd thesis." (fap fap fap. is that someone vigorously stoking their ego?)
3) "Should musicians, writers, artists, actors etc be exempted from the principles of collaboration because they are merely exercising their creative talents, which are free of ideology and politics?" (by this point in the article I lost all respect for the man)
Sorry to use the blog to spew my hatred this evening, but happy tidings shall be posted soon.

Get Those Calendars Out
So I admit, there's no fucking way I could possibly keep up with everything that is going on in LA.
Ever.
But fortunately for us all there is help out there. Thanks to our good friends over at Art Review we now have artcalendr.com (yes, I correctly misspelled that). Though still just a Beta it seems to be kicking ass. Pretty much it's a chance for you to keep your finger on the pulse of the Non-City (or whatever city you happen to be in) with regards to all the exhibits going on at museums and galleries around town. You can even create a free account that allows you to create a personal calendar and to do lists.
And for those who really like convenience, here's a nice list of galleries in the LA area with links to their website. Just in case you need it.
One more thing, don't forget tomorrow night is Shannon Ebner's book release at the Mandrake. You know you want to be there (if not for the hordes of cultured persons, at least for a couple stiff drinks).
